This Machu Picchu to Galapagos Tour combines three of South America’s major highlights. The magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu World Heritage Site, considered one the ‘new’ 7 wonders of the world, perched in a spectacular location amongst the misty peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range. Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire is now a vibrant city, combining beautiful examples of both Inca and Colonial architecture. Last but not least is our 6 day first-class cruise in the natural wonderland of Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, an unforgettable adventure in the volcanic realm that led Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution.
Although not as well known internationally, Ecuador’s capital of Quito, perched high in the Ecuadorian Andes, combined with market town of Otavalo is an additional treat. Quito has perhaps the best preserved colonial centre of all the Andean capitals and has recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status. Throughout your Machu Picchu to Galapagos Tour in the Andean region you will not only see remarkable Andean scenery and world class archaeological sites, but you will also experience a thriving indigenous community that maintains culture and traditions from times long before Pizarro and his Spanish Conquistadors set foot upon these magnificent lands. Welcome to the New World!

Day 15 -
On arrival in Lima’s International Airport you will be met by a Machete Tours representative and transferred to the Hotel in the capital’s Miraflores district. Miraflores is a comfortable and easily navigable part of this vast and historic metropolis, an area with plenty of trendy restaurants, bars and shops. From the modern Larcomar Shopping Centre you can enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. This evening is left free to explore the city and its attractions or relax and recuperate from your international flight.
Today we take a short internal flight to the ancient Inca capital of Cusco, located high in the Andes at more than 3,300 m above sea level. On arrival at Cusco’s airport you will be transferred to the Garcilaso Hotel (in a historic heart of Cusco). After checking into rooms and making yourselves comfortable one of our Machu Picchu to Galapagos Tour staff will brief you on your tour itinerary, give a brief introduction to Cuzco and answer any questions you might have. The rest of the day is free to explore this beautiful city, the capital of the Inca Empire from the 11th century and today rich in colonial plazas, ruins of Inca fortresses and temples and a myriad of small cobbled streets to explore. Take it easy though, as you’ll find that simple tasks become a lot harder in the high mountain air – this is a good chance to acclimatise! (B)
This morning our local guide will meet you at the hotel and take you on a tour of Cuzco and its surrounds, taking in the city’s most impressive monuments and putting these in the context of the truly cataclysmic events that played out here in the 16th Century, when two of the world’s great cultures collided. We visit the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, Koricancha, the magnificent Inca Temple of the Sun, home to probably the finest Inca stonework – precisely carved stones that fit perfectly, without need for mortar. We continue to the great ceremonial centre of Sacsayhuaman located in a beautiful position overlooking Cusco in the valley below. Sacsayhuaman’s scale is quite awe-inspiring, vast walls built with individual carved stones, the largest of which weigh more than 125 tons. The Quechua festival of Inti Raymi concludes within these walls every year in June – a truly spectacular demonstration of Indigenous culture, and well worth seeing! On leaving Sacsayhuaman we visit the well preserved Inca sites of Qenco, Puka Pukara and the Temple of Tambo Machay. After a tour of approximately 4 ½ to 5 hours we return to our hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax, continue you exploration of Cusco or (if you still have energy left!) explore Cusco’s lively social scene, diverse bars, clubs and fine array of restaurants. (B)
Today we take a tour of the Urubamba River and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Leaving Cusco by bus we cross the hills dividing Cusco from this fascinating centre of Quechua culture. The countryside is largely rural, with local farmers going about their lives in much the same way as they have for centuries. Soon after leaving Cusco the outstanding peaks of Urubamba Mountain Range reveal themselves, jagged glacial peaks rising to well over 5000 meters. These mountains were and still are considered Apus (gods) to the local people. We visit the market town of Pisac, overlooked by an impressive Inca fortress. After lunch we continue to Ollantaytambo, another charming agricultural town in the heart of the valley. The Inca terraces above town were the site of a historic battle during Manco Inca’s famous uprising against the Spanish Forces. We then head for Urubamba and our comfortable hotel. (B,L,)
After breakfast we head to Ollantaytambo to catch the train to Aguas Calientes, or Machu Picchu Town as it has been recently renamed. The train ride itself is spectacular, following the course of the Vilcanota River as it surges through a spectacular gorge on its journey towards the Amazon Basin. All around we are surrounded by steep mountain peaks and increasingly lush vegetation. Arriving in Aguas Calientes you will be transferred to your hotel. This afternoon of our Machu Picchu to Galapagos Tour is left free for exploration of the town’s various shops and small markets. You can also visit the thermal baths for which the town is named. (B,D)
Starting early we take a 25 minute ride above Aguas Calientes to the truly awesome Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, a site straddling a mountain top at more than 2300 m above sea level and surrounded by misty cloudforest covered peaks and incredible views on all sides. This site lay undiscovered and engulfed the jungle until Yale University Professor Hiram Bingham chanced upon it during an archaeological expedition. Since then much of the purpose and nature of this site has remained a mystery. After a guided tour of the site you will have time to explore on your own and if you’re feeling energetic then there is the possibility of climbing Huayna Picchu peak, the distinctive steep sided mountain overlooking Machu Picchu (tour has to be pre-booked).
Returning to Aguas Calientes we board the train for Cusco at around 3.30pm, arriving in the early evening. From here you’re transported back to your hotel. Evening free to explore Cusco. (B,L)
Following a morning transfer to Cusco airport we fly to Quito via Lima. On arrival in the Ecuadorian capital you will be met by the Machete Tours representative and transferred to your Hotel. (B)
Quito’s colonial centre is considered the best preserved of all the Andean capitals and has recently been given UNESCO World Heritage Status in recognition of its special significance. Quito’s location at 2850m in a valley at the base of Pichincha Volcano is spectacular and adds an additional charm to the city. Today on our we tour the city, exploring parts of both the new and old cities. After visiting the Cathedral and area surrounding the Plaza San Francisco we head up the viewpoint or ‘Mirador’ of Cerro Panecillo. From here views of both the old and new cities are visible and the city can be appreciated in the context of its amazing volcanic surrounds. Afternoon at leisure to explore Quito in greater depth. (B)
Today we explore the spectacular landscape North of Quito. Driving out of the city we head north towards the Colombian border. We stop briefly at the town of Calderon, famous for making bread figurines ‘masapan’. Heading onwards we cross the Equator, stopping at the town of Cayambe, situated beneath the huge volcano of the same name. At 5790m glacier clad Cayambe is the third highest peak in Ecuador and one of the country’s most challenging climbs. Continuing North in this remarkable Machu Picchu to Galapagos Tour landscape we pass the scenic San Pablo Lake before arriving at Otavalo, a market town famed for its indigenous population and crafts production. Spending time at the town’s markets we then return to Quito, breaking the journey at the towns of Penuche and Cotacachi. (B,L)
This morning you will fly from Quito to San Cristóbal Airport. After welcome, check-in, lunch, briefing and the safety-drill we leave for a 45-minute bus-ride (22.5 km / 13.2 mi) to our first visitor’s site in the highlands of this island, the Galapagos giant tortoise breeding centre on Colorado Hill. Before dinner your guide will give the first daily briefing for tomorrow, and will explain the yachts and National Park rules. The captain and his crew will then present you with a welcome cocktail and make a toast to celebrate your first evening on-board. Around midnight we will lift the anchor and navigate about 5 hours to the south-eastern island of Española. (B,L,D)
After breakfast your island excursion will start with a so-called ‘dry landing’ (with footwear) at Suarez Point. This morning promises to be a highlight of your cruise. During a longer guided walk (Moderate Level; 4 km, 2.5 mi, about 2 hours) you will pass spectacular seabird colonies on top of the cliffs, which contain some short scrambling passages (avoidable depths). Back on-board we will navigate for about an hour to our afternoon’s exotic visitor’s site. After lunch you will make your first ‘dive’ in the alluring turquoise-coloured Gardner Bay, where you can admire colourful tropical reef fish, snorkel side by side with a Pacific green turtle, or find yourself in the middle of playful Galapagos sea lions. You will then make a ‘wet landing’ (bare feet) on the wide sand beach. This is a good spot for a stroll alongside the sea lions colony (Easy Level), or a moment of reflexion, relaxation, or rolling with the sea lions in the surf. After dinner we will navigate the longest stretch of Route A, which will take about 7 hours, navigating west to the neighbouring island of Floreana. (B.L.D.)
After breakfast the inflatable dinghies will bring you to the rocky rim of Devil’s Crown, which is located just outside the bay of Cormorant Point. If fantastic deep-water snorkelling (with sometimes stronger currents) is not your thing there are other options such as birdwatching, or alternatively you can enjoy an inflatable dinghy ride (landing is prohibited on these marine visitor’s sites). After a snack we make a wet landing on the greeny beach of Cormorant Point. From here you will follow the sandy path to the other, powdery sand beach of the peninsula, which has been formed by a lava tongue (Easy Level; about 1.5 km, 1 mi). En route you can observe the American flamingo lagoon from different viewpoints and perspectives. After a short displacement to Post Office Bay and lunch, you can post your holiday greetings in the traditional barrel just behind the beach (wet landing), which is also a comfortable place to relax. You can then explore the submerged crater rim that surrounds the neighbouring bay of Baroness Lookout in your own pace by sea-kayak, or by inflatable dinghy. Around midnight we will navigate about 5 hours northeast to the extraordinary island of Santa Fé. (B.L.D.)
After breakfast and another wet landing you will take a guided walk from the beach of Santa Fe. There is an easy shorter circuit or a strenuous longer hike land inland (Moderate Level; ca. 3km / 2 mi.); the guide will decide which path to follow. Don’t forget to save some energy for excellent swimming or snorkelling in the crystal-clear azure waters of Barrington Bay. Around lunchtime we will proceed to South Plaza (about 2.5 hours Northwest), possibly accompanied by bottle nose dolphins. South Plaza is one out of two islets close to the eastern coast of Santa Cruz. On this Jurassic islet you will undertake a contrast guided nature walk (avoidable depths on the cliff-edge; Easy Level; ca. 1.25km / 0.75 miles). Before – a hopefully spectacular – sunset we will start out journey to tomorrow’s destination, North Seymour, following the coast of Santa Cruz to the heart of the archipelago (about 4 hours). We drop the anchor in the Itabaca Channel, where you can be rocked to sleep by the gentle water. Additional options scuba-diving: Gordon Rocks (Expert/Advanced) or Santa Fe (All levels). (B.L.D.)
After an early snack you will take a guided walk through the waking seabird’s colonies, following a circular loop (Easy Level; 2 km / 1.25 mi, about 2 hours). Filled with impressions you will return on-board to fill up your stomach with our delicious breakfast buffet. Later in the morning snorkelling is scheduled. As usual you will be welcomed on-board with a snack, while we continue about 2 hours west to Bachas Beach, where we will serve lunch. In the afternoon you will make another wet landing followed by an easy stroll along the waterline of this coral sand beach. Before dinner we will sail back to the heart of the Archipelago, where you will spend your last night on board, enjoying a farewell cocktail with the crew and your fellow passengers, and enjoying another quiet sleep, while floating.
Shortly after the wake-up call and another snack you will undertake this last excursion. Depending on the tide and the check-in time for your flight to Guayaquil or Quito we may or may not have the opportunity to go on land, where you can freely stroll around. Otherwise we will make an interesting dinghy-ride along the rocky shore, full of seabirds. After breakfast it’s time say goodbye and leave the yacht. We will accompany you and your luggage to the airport, where you can check-in your flight to Guayaquil in Ecuador main land. In Guayaquil airport our representative will assist you borading your international flight home. (B.L.) End of Service
